If Max Payne was all about Max, then The Fall of Max Payne is about Max and Mona. Presumed dead following the events of the first game, Mona nevertheless turns up here to further complicate Max’s life.
While Mona isn’t the kind of woman an NYPD detective needs to get mixed up with, seeing as Max is a fairly complicated guy he rather inevitably ends up doing just that. Though the cops aren’t after Max this time (at least, not at the start of the game) they’re certainly after Mona, wanted for the suspected murder of a senator in a case assigned to Max’s partner, Jeanette Winterson.
Without giving too much away, at various points Max and Mona are required to work together, with Mona adding a helping hand during some of the more intensive battles. More significantly, you’ll also get the chance to play as Mona while Max is otherwise indisposed.
While this is a nice touch, it doesn’t mean an awful lot in gameplay terms, as Mona seems to have exactly the same attributes as her male counterpart, moving at the same speed, carrying similar weapons, and having access to bullet-time. The bits when you have to provide covering fire for Max through your sniper scope are quite good, though.
