No matter how much you fiddle around with the sound in Shogo, there’s no escaping the fact that the speech is all a little bit on the quiet side. Most of the time, you get subtitles, displayed alongside a little picture of the person who’s talking, but on occasion, for example your first meeting with your commanding officer, you get diddly-squat. For a story-based game like this, it’s just not good enough.
I’m glad you mentioned this. I was doing that first section walking around the ship, with the volume at an appropriate level for the previous combat, and could barely make out anything people were saying.

Did not remember any such problems when I played it aeons ago, possibly because it was a French version — sound levels may have been fixed for it.
