Recently i’ve been wasting a lot of time on TV Tropes, a website primarily dedicated to cateloguing recurring themes and ideas that turn up in fiction in all kinds of media, including gaming. t into related topics in various forms of media though – there’s a lot there and it’s it’s almost like a more light-hearted Wikipedia without the directive to be rigidly neutral.
I thought this quick overview on The Console Wars was quite fun. It briefly covers each generation and gives a pretty fair guess at who “won” in terms of sales and popularity. (short form: Nintendo in the early days, then they lost it in the late nineties, now they’re leading again due to the embracing of casual gaming)
I’ve never actually owned a console, and only recently picked up a handheld (the DS). Still I have followed developments on and off from the sidelines. I’m too young to remember the first two generations, but have been a Nintendo fan since the third (ie the NES). Even tho, now I’m actually in a position to buy their games, I find it a depressing exercise in flicking past boxes entitled Are you smarter than a 10 year old, All Star Cheerleader and Imagine Dream Wedding. PS and Xbox meanwhile have never attracted me – not to say there’s anything wrong with them, just little of interest to me that the PC doesn’t do better.
sidenote: I’m quite determined to try and get into the habit of more regular updates to this blog. Twice-weekly perhaps? The flow of new reviews is going pretty slowly right now, but i really should at least be able to think of something brief to say here every few days.
Actually, I’ve just added a new review. But they aren’t exactly flowing at the moment, I agree.
I’m on board with more blog posts, I think that was the general idea whenever we came up with it (ie to make up for lack of ‘proper’ content).

D’oh, sorry. I should have said *my* flow is going slow.

All right! Christmas comes early! Thanks Rik, for delivering exactly what I’d hoped for.
Spot on review of MP2, etc etc, can’t think of anything you missed. Always thought ragdoll effects were pretty gimmicky, but their inclusion here was always good for some laughs.
Did miss the goofy grimace though. Also fun to compare the original, somewhat plain Mona from her brief appearance in MP1, to the young Julianne Moore-a-like she turns into in MP2.
The film review was actually very helpful. I was wondering what a fan of the game had to say about it. Sounds like a rental, but at least one I won’t have to suffer through. I’m more interested in the visuals at this point than anything else – some of the stills and trailer shots look incredibly slick and stylish.
Turns out I only had one disk of AvP, but the complete set is now in house. I will get on that shortly (if Fallout 3 doesn’t keep getting in the way).

Hey, didn’t mean to sound kranky – generally I’m being less productive than last year in terms of cranking out new reviews. Just happened to be coincidence that I had my review ready the same day as this post.
Just a quick note on the console wars – it always amazes me how angry people get about this kind of thing. Take a look at the ‘comments’ section of almost any new release on Eurogamer (for example) and you’ll be guaranteed some kind of angry exchange about 360 vs PS3 (and how the Wii isn’t for ‘proper gamers’).
The only consoles I’ve ever had are Playstations (original and PS2) – and to be honest the main motivation was to be able to play Pro Evolution Soccer. Since that came out on PC (and I got a powerful enough PC to play it) I haven’t really touched my PS2 – except for Guitar Hero.
I have a DS, too, which I haven’t played on that much, but should be good value for holidays. As luck would have it, I’m going on one tomorrow (yes!). Made the error of buying some DS games without checking out any reviews – apparently Lego Star Wars II is good on every console except DS, where it was so bad another developer remade it and repackaged it as part of The Complete Saga the following year.
Doh! These multiformat releases are so complicated these days, or perhaps I’m just getting old.
JMan, thanks as ever for your kind words. Visually the MP film is pretty good, although (as ever) the stills and trailers pretty much show all the best bits.

Unfortunately, most good DS games never seem to make it to Europe. Import, my friend, import!
