There’s been a countdown on the GOG homepage for a little while now promising a big and exciting announcement soon.
It transpires that they’ve signed a deal with Activision, which doesn’t immediately make me think of any game in particular that I’d like to see on GOG soon.
However, as part of the announcement, the first Gabriel Knight game, Sins of the Fathers, has been released. I didn’t know Activision had the rights to that series, to be honest.
Anyway, the disk version has been an abandonware staple for a while now, but we’re talking about the full talkie version here, which is something I’ve wanted to get my hands on for a while.
Disclaimer : Speculation regarding upcoming reviews on FFG is not linked to the likelihood of them appearing.
As I understand it Vivendi bought Sierra, then merged with Activision (to create Activision Blizzard). Hence Sierra oldies now having their publisher listed as Activision on Gog and Steam.

Well, for now it looks like a bit of a coup for GOG. There’s no Gabriel Knight on Steam…for the moment.

Oh, Uplink. I was all about this game when it was released. Only downside was when I found (on my own, not part of mission) an account with ten million dollars tucked away (they randomize the amounts apparently). Tough, tense hack, but got away scot free.
The unfortunate part comes when you buy the best of everything. Glass-walled secure server, top-of-the-line processor, best crackers… the rest of the game got fairly boring. I’d found the game’s "I Win" button.
Also, fun fact: The LAN hacking and IRC chat interface were added later in the "Project Nakatomi" patch. Introversion were rather coy about what Project Nakatomi actually was, and created a short alternate reality game around its release. This led to the "Project Nakatomi Task Force" dedicated to cracking the various codes and passwords (simple encryptions, messages hidden in the code of jpeg images, etc).
I had seen Die Hard enough times to remember the only password in the entire movie (akagi) and posted as such on the Task Force boards. Turns out, it was the missing password they needed, and it led to a blank webpage that was updated later that day to essentially say "You’re making progress faster than we expected, and the rest of the treasure hunt isn’t done yet!"
So I personally ruined Introversion’s plans. (Actually some independent "hunters" hit that point around the same time).
Side note, I imagine one or both of you has taken a look at Star Trek Online. Static and I are both bumming around there if you want to connect and boldly go etc. etc…
And Rik, check your email!

Hi JMan, sorry, took a long weekend last week and been a bit all over the place this week so far.
I did get your e-mail, haven’t had the chance to respond yet. Sorry!
I enjoyed Uplink, from what I’ve heard there’s a few secrets to unearth but it didn’t quite grab me enough to search for them.
The number of games I’ve played online can be counted on the fingers of one, er, finger. I don’t imagine Stoo will be able to resist however…
Oh, and partially relevant to this post – Vampire the Masquerade Redemption has now been added to GoG…is this an RPG I could enjoy?

Never played Redemption actually. Thought Bloodlines’ story and universe was interested, but the mechanics (especially combat) were clunky. So I suppose an RPG in the same universe with sharper gameplay could be okay.

I’ve not played redemption but it looks like a more traditional kind of RPG as opposed to bloodline’s Deus-Ex approach.
I’m vaguely tempted to give Trek Online a go, although the only Online Gaming I’ve done to date is Warcraft.

Mixed opinions on STO. I love it (bought a lifetime sub on the basis that I would easily level two or three characters even if nothing changed, so seemed a good bet on future expansion), but then I have strange tastes in MMOs (loved original Galaxies, can’t stand WoW).
Lot of vocal hate as there usually is, lot of opinions with merit that the game isn’t where it could/should be. On the other hand, it should say something that Cryptic can’t upgrade their servers fast enough to keep up with the demand. I can’t even log in right now.
Check out Ebay for a "Del Taco shuttle code." If I understand correctly, each promo code gives you a shuttle pet (meh) and 2 days of trial time. That should run you $5 USD or less. Cheapest way to try the game out that I know of, but I would strongly suggest waiting a few weeks until the server upgrades and evens out.
