Hi all.
Just a quick note to say we’re aware of some strange issues with our menu pages on the desktop site.
The reviews themselves appear to be unaffected, but something seems to have gone wrong with the genre categories. And it all seems to be ok on mobile at the moment.
Anyway, we’re looking into it! (Or Stoo is, at least).
Update – The menus should now be working as normal. – Stoo

Gentlemen,
Thought you might be interested, for fun, by these few stats about PC games ratings grabbed from several Web sites beginning circa 1995, here in almost CSV format.
— the games I still have the floppies/CDs/DVDs of.
— all the games I’ve had i.e. the list mentionned supra, with all the games I dumped to bin and with all the games I gave away.
— all FFG reviews up to May 26, 2024 (Tomb Raider) : first flattened to [A..E] system for comparison, then with your original notes [00..10]
— ratings of a Web site dedicated to games, unfortunately I forgot the name of
— ratings of another Web site dedicated to games, unfortunately I forgot the name of ; it had the originality to include for each game rating by editors and rating by readers (less severe than critics, it seems).
No set of data fits the expected Gauss distribution. One may see many a reason for that : keeping the best, overrating the games, ignoring bad games…
Use a monospace police for better view. Format is obvious :

(Note : seems runs of filling dashes have been automatically converted by the site, thus ruining the nice ASCII display : original width was 40 characters.)

That’s some interesting data, thanks!
I we usually avoid anything really terrible, and try to be on the positive side about the games we do review, hence very little getting less than 5/10. (except for Megarace). Something that’s dated and clunky but still reasonably interesting is likely to get a 6/10 out of us.

A slightly better but complicated system would consist of several ratings :
— when the game is published ;
— 5 years after (when the game’s status is established) ;
— 15 years after (when it is, sometimes, rediscovered by those who overlooked it at first publication and rave about it without having played with it) ;
— and possibly a last rating 25 years after, when it is almost impossible to play it for lack of hardware or of good emulator. 😉
Non-gaussian distribution of frequencies is thus related to
— a higher quality filter (FFG, my own collection) ;
— obedience to announcers (most games sites and magazines if the latter still exist) ;
— buyers not very critical of the products.
