Maniac Mansion came to the PC having originally been released on the Commodore 64, Atari ST and Amiga systems. In 1990, a version was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, albeit in a heavily censored form due to Nintendo’s overzealous approach towards ‘mature’ themes in games on their systems.
The man in charge of porting the game to the NES, Douglas Crockford, wrote an interesting article (Now You’re Really Playing with Power: The Expurgation of Maniac Mansion for the Nintendo Entertainment System) telling of the various difficulties he encountered in dealing with Nintendo and finding a version acceptable to them. It certainly makes for an interesting read, especially when you should be doing something with a spreadsheet at work.
Check it out here.
